The visual artist event, where they gather hobbyists, amateurs, professionals and aspirers to draw their weapon of choice and desperately try and not get burnout. Or just throw themselves to the flames. Don't do the latter btw.
Below is a collection of all I've done for this year's event. It's a small amount, well-- Sort of. We'll get to that.
First off isn't an attack for anyone, it's for me! A few years ago I made a little idol animation for the dream vs nightmare event and I loved how it turned out - it was my artfight icon for a few years.
I managed to make this a few days before the event and enjoyed the process. It was quite fiddly making clip studio paint behave with shape tweens but I learnt a lot. Would love an excuse to do this type of animation again.
First attack! Cerbernard for Yunisverse. I saw Cerbernard on tumblr and was delighted by the design. Then I saw her artfight card before the event. I saw the doggie featured. I had to draw the doggie. Also added one of my own character petting the dog because he loves dogs (he wishes they were real).
Also what if we were fan ocs derived from a nintendo ip and we were both on artfight :^> !
Next was Maelor for kyratheweirdo. I thought her design was neat! I love a tiefling and there was a lot I wanted to play about it. Ended up in that realistic-y fantasy illustration style that I wander into but am not super comfortable in. My critical brain has a lot to pick over this but overall I am proud!
This one!! I saw the character during the event and I did not care it if was a friendly fire, I had to draw OogieBoogie's BOO'ka. Great design, great shapes. Absolutely had the thought of my own character, Ms Foam, talking with this troll, singlehandedly brought her back into my character roster.
Despite being initially fine with doing a friendly fire with a quick sketch, I think this wound up being one of the best scene pieces I've done ever?
I love how the environment ended up and the slight lighting on the two characters. I try to ignore the gamification number go up aspect of artfight but this one. Sighing a little bit. Oh well, thats what an amazing character does!
I saw time and energy catch up to me, so I wanted to do a pivot to busts! This is DeedeeFl0wer's Elaine! Real pretty design that I wanted to take a stab at! Also somewhat of a secret thank you for letting me share the big old thing I'm planning with you first
Speaking of, lets get to it.
First off, I would like to blame Obby (aka artistofobbession) for this. To quickly preface, a lot of my friends play tabletop games with the Toonkind homebrew and record the session for funsies. I was absolutely enamoured by the cold intro of one of these games and had the patented animatic living in my head(tm) about it.
I mention this, and she says I could make it an artfight attack.
So blame her as I proceeded to make a 40 second frame by frame half animated interpretation of the opening of the sessions featuring Obby's Primrose Poodle, Yuni's Larry Samuel, Mocksalad's Blink Lightly and Megamarine's Mike Standee.
I would of gone all the way, like fully animate it, but I had hit the edge of my energy reserve. I do want to finish this though, with inks and colours, more movement tweaks and composite thingys.
It was extremely fun interpreting the characters animation styles (because again, toonkind. living cartoons) and desperately looking at behind the scene footage of old disney animators showing off tiedowns of tarzan, like that footage would download straight into my body.
Maybe when I finish this I'll go over the entire process and explain why I thought animating 3 out of the 4 characters on 1s was a justifiable and good idea.
Last day of artfight! Ended up finishing up the sketch of Hyssop for Snailcomicz into a full bust. Another character I've seen prior to artfight but finally got a chance to draw them. Love his design so much, and a Hi-Fi rush oc which is a great universe to slide into.
I'm extremely proud of how this turned out. Usually I'm 'heavy' with the shading, using a plain multiply layer and tweaking from there. With this tho I did light shading with just form information and I lovee this. Easier to read and just have subtle tone shifts instead. Great way to end the event
Though there was also this
Yeah
(Tsugi belongs to Snailcomicz, Ten belongs to Megamarine)
That is all for my time with artfight! I enjoyed my time and kept my energy more or less in tact. In turn you can see all the attacks sent my way here on the website, I'm so grateful for the art given to me. I'll also link the social media posts that share the attacks featuring my characters here:
Yuni, Obby, Sharoo, Aik, Creaky, Marzi
I hope the july was kind to you, participant or not and I hope you have a good rest of the day!
